The holiday attractions of
Brittany
are well known and as golf now plays a major role, it is a favoured destination
of golfers.
With the exception of Rennes, all the featured courses are situated on
or near to the spectacular coast, in exhilarating natural surroundings,
which can also prove to be a major distraction!
Choose between traditional 'Scottish' links, rolling parkland, true forest,
gorse & heath - the most difficult decision is where to play.
Green fees are affordable in comparison to many other destinations and
the purchase of a Brittany Golf Pass is an even better value for money proposition.
The temperate microclimate, warmed by the Gulf Stream, is ideal for golf.
Days away from the courses can be used to discover the rugged seascape,
sandy beaches, quiet coves and the cobble-paved mediaeval walled towns,
rich in history and charm.
There are many wonderful examples of prehistoric megaliths and vestiges
of Neolithic civilization to be seen - legends and myths are plentiful.
If fish and seafood is your preference, look no further. There is a profusion
of lobsters, scallops, crabs, prawns, mussels and especially oysters that
are superb, even by French standards.
The wafer thin crepes are just as famous and even more delicious when accompanied
by the local cider or a bottle or two of the dry white wine, in which the
area excels.
Distinctly different to other French regions, as it was only unionised
with France in 1532, there is a certain Celtic fascination and mystique
that is still apparent today.
The entire region featured here is strictly not Brittany alone. We have
expanded the boundaries a little to incorporate La Baule, La Bretesche,
St-Jean de Monts, La Domangere and Port Bourgenay.
St-Malo Once a fortified island, this impressive walled
city is not only a major port and ferry terminal but also a popular holiday
resort. It was all but obliterated during the last war but has now been
restored to its former splendour.
There is a maze of narrow, winding streets within the walls offering a
huge choice of restaurants and lively nightlife.
Dinard This popular seaside resort was 'discovered' by
the British in the 1850's and a simple fishing village became one of the
most elegant beach resorts in northern Europe. The gracious hotels, casino
and a promenade overlooking the sweeping beaches are reminiscent of a more
leisurely era.
Dol-de-Bretagne A small town with some beautiful old houses
and a 13-century cathedral. The Chteau des Ormes estate
and golf course is situated south of the town.
Rennes As the wealthy capital of the region, this attractive
city is not lacking in vitality. The 'old town', with the most beautiful
timber frame houses in France, lies to the north and the more modern quarter
has been established to the south. There are so many restaurants, crperies
and bars to choose from - you will definitely be spoilt for choice.
Benodet One of the most popular and lively resorts on
this attractive stretch of Breton coast. Although well developed, it still
retains a great deal of charm.
La Baule This is a fashionable, elegant town with reputedly,
the best beach in France - 8 kms of gently shelving, golden sand. It boasts
a generous selection of restaurants, shops, chic boutiques, sporting activities
a stylish casino and is deservedly, one of the most famous resorts in France.
Nantes A completely cosmopolitan city, again with an 'old
town' that is especially vibrant. Numerous bars and restaurants are crammed
into the narrow, mediaeval streets.
Saint-Jean de Monts This vast coastal stretch on the
semi-wild Atlantic foreshore is miraculously unspoilt. The beaches are far
superior to any of their Mediterranean counterparts and well worth the 80minute
drive from La Baule.
La Roch-sur-Yon Built by Napoleon as a garrison town,
La Roche is 10 kms north of La Domangere golf club and
only 32 kms from the fashionable resort of Les Sables d'Olonne,
with its busy harbour and huge, sandy beach.
