Spain Golf Guide
Spain is one of the world’s great golfing destinations. There are literally hundreds of high-quality golf courses in Spain, many of them ranked in the European top ten. If you are planning on playing some golf in Spain here is a guide to the various regions and the top golf courses in Spain.
Costa Brava
This is an evolving area in which to play golf in Spain. There are 10 great championship courses in the Costa Brava region, including the Emporda courses, and the classic Club de Golf Costa Brava. Reasonable golf rates and a mild, year-round climate make this area a perfect place to play golf in Spain. Besides enjoying a Costa Brava golfing holiday, be sure to allow time for relaxing on the beautiful white-sand beaches, walking in the wooded mountains, or visiting some of the charming old villages. And if nightlife is your thing, it’s all here.

Costa Blanca
Miles of beaches and mountain trails, traditional towns and villages, and over 20 top Spanish golf courses, make this southeastern region a favourite holiday spot. The centrally located Alicante airport gives easy access to courses such as Alenda, Alicante and Bonalba while further afield you will find some of the great names of golf in Spain like El Saler or La Manga.
Tourist towns like Benidorm, with its popular beaches, attract the crowds, but if you stay in some of the out-of-the-way old villages, where cultural traditions are maintained, you’re sure to have a memorable Spanish golf holiday.

Almeria
A warm, dry, Mediterranean climate attracts many golfers to the eight championship golf courses in Spain’s southeast Almeria Province. Its long, often deserted beaches, with pretty small coves, rise to broad plains and high mountains. Here, you’ll enjoy a low-key, quieter holiday than in the regions further north, although there are plenty of street stalls and shops in the towns, plus bars and restaurants in each resort. On of the most unique golf courses in Spain is Desert Springs, Europe’s first desert course, which matches the standards achieved by similar courses in Arizona and California.
Costa del Sol
This is the premier destination for golf in Spain, where courses practically border each other for the entire length of the coastline. Many of the courses run down to sandy beaches. The high-rise resort towns of Benalmadena and Fuengirola, near the airport, are perfect bases for a Spanish golf holiday, but you may prefer the mountain courses such as Monte Mayor at Benahavis, where challenging hilly greens have spectacular views. The twin resorts of Marbella and Puerto Banus are home to many top courses, such as Aloha Golf and Los Naranjos.
This region is also home to the legendary Valderrama, the best golf course in Spain and quite possibly the whole of Europe.

Cadiz
One of the less well known regions to play golf in Spain is Cadiz. Accessed from airports in Seville or Gibralter, the Cadiz region, with the historic walled city of Cadiz as its capital, has around 10 courses ranging from Ballena, set alongside the Atlantic Ocean, to the challenging, inland Montecastillo. Around the villages of Chipiona and Rota, in the south, you’ll find some good beaches and pine forests set along a rugged coastline.
Costa de la Luz
There may be less golfing options here, but the green fees are relatively inexpensive in this southern region of Spain. Since it is only forty-five minutes’ drive from Faro airport, the area is best accessed from Portugal. Being close to the Algarve, you get the choice of even more championship courses, and a good selection of moderately priced accommodation. From here it is an easy daytrip to the more popular courses nearby. For the best value golf in Spain choose the Costa de la Luz.

Majorca and Menorca
These Mediterranean Balearic Island destinations each have a range of excellent courses that combine golfing with magnificent scenery. Majorca offers year-round golf at courses such as Santa Ponsa, and a cosmopolitan nightlife and shopping experience that complements your days on the greens. Menorca, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is laid-back and unspoiled. Besides golf, the island also offers sailing, walking tracks, and horse riding.
